Regina v Newton: CACD 5 Oct 1998

The defendant appealed a sentence of five years for supplying heroin. He had no previous convictions, and had been injured in service as a fireman. He had fallen into financial difficulties and taken in lodgers, who had been dealing the drugs. He knew of their activities, and taken part, but his involvement was peripheral. He had pleaded guilty.
Held: A sentence of three years was substituted.
